In a difficult Spanish League encounter at Camp Nou, Lionel Messi inspired Barcelona to a 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao.

Four minutes after the resumption, Jordi Alba’s own goal gave the visitors a lifeline, but a 74th minute effort by Antoine Griezmann secured the hosts’ win.

Before going straight to the right side of the post, Lionel Messi watched his free kick climb above the athletic players.

And for Blaugrana, who lost the Spanish Super Cup title to the same opposition on January 17, this was a nice piece of revenge.

The goal was also the legend’s 49th for the Spanish League outfit from a direct free-kick, with 38 of those coming to La Liga.

The men of Ronald Koeman have now risen above Real Madrid on the table, in spite of the same points as the battling rivals who lost to Levante at home over the weekend.

Meanwhile, despite having one match in hand, both teams trail table-toppers Atletico Madrid by 10 points.

After the match, Griezmann said the six-time Ballon d’Or winner was instrumental in his side winning five consecutive matches in La Liga. He said and was quoted by Goal.

“Messi is a legend, we are enjoying him, and hopefully he will keep helping us win.”
